Fiesta Diary :: Day Five :: Wednesday 26 July 2006

Richard gives us the terrible news that he has decided to stay in Budapest. Shocker! He signs the car on the bonnet and waves us on our way. As pre-warned by Phil Hambley, Hungary is “as flat as a kipper's dick”. The motorways are pretty good. We stop for lunch at a big motorway service place. Almost as soon as we get going again the traffic grinds to a complete halt. I take some time out to decorate the car with the coloured pens, marking the very front tip of the bonnet with www.teamfiesta.com. After about half an hour we get moving again. About a mile up the road there is a tractor pulling a truck out of the ditch at the side of the motorway. Later on we get a bit lost. Wish we had a GPS locator to map the actual route we've taken. It would be pretty funny to see where we actually went!

We eventually reach the Yugoslav border and have to pay the $190 entrance tax. Well worth it considering we're going to be in this shithole for less than a day. We pass Sofia (and don't go to “student town” as we haven't enough time) and Belgrade? Which just looks like a big grey concrete monster. We decide to carry on driving for as long as possible and at some point pass over into Bulgaria.
